ABOUT THIS ADVENTURE
It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with “Survivor” and reality TV game shows (I’m actually wearing a “Survivor” buff writing this…) and one of the best things that has resulted from my superfan status is having the best group of friends of Boston College Alumni I could ever ask for.
This past weekend I traveled to San Francisco to compete in a 2-day “Amazing Race” game against 11 other teams made up of friends from all over the country. My “Boston College Reality Crew” – as I like to call us – reunites annually to compete in a reality TV game and this year marked our 10th Anniversary.
The Tribe Has Spoken
It all began on May 31, 2000 when CBS aired a little show called “Survivor.” Two years later an R.A. at Boston College named Pat decided to run a semester-long game for his freshman known as “Survivor: Newton.” In that same year in Chicago, I ran my first full-scale “Survivor” (check it out).
At the start of my sophomore year at Boston College I heard a group of seniors watched “Survivor” together so I emailed one of them to join. We quickly became friends and many of them played in “Survivor: Newton.” When I learned about this, I finally realized why I had been rejected from Notre Dame – so I would become friends with these people. That year, in 2005, I ran “Survivor: Beverly” as a reunion game for “Survivor: Newton” players along with their family and friends… and the rest is history!
10 years later, this “Reality Crew” of Boston College Alumni is still a group of best friends that flies across the country (and world) to still play games… it’s why I love “Survivor” so much! Beyond the actual game, it has been the catalyst and glue to a group of crazy, competitive, colorful people that I’m beyond grateful to have as lifelong friends.
